Expansion of Grid Connections Announced by Kenya Power

Improving National Electricity Access

May 22, 2024

Kenya Power announces plans to expand its electricity grid, aiming to connect more households and businesses throughout the country.

Kenya Power has officially launched Phase IV of the Last Mile Connectivity Project (LMCP), a significant initiative aimed at accelerating electricity access across the country. This ambitious project is set to connect 280,000 new customers to the national grid by November 2025, marking a crucial step towards achieving universal electricity access as outlined in Kenya's Vision 2030 development blueprint.

Overview of the Last Mile Connectivity Project

The LMCP is designed to enhance electricity access for households and businesses, particularly in underserved areas. Since its inception in 2015, the project has successfully connected over 742,805 households to the grid through various donor and government-funded initiatives. The latest phase will involve the installation of 940 new transformers, maximizing connectivity around existing infrastructure and extending medium voltage lines to reach more customers.

Financial Backing and Implementation

Phase IV of the LMCP is backed by a funding package totaling KShs.27 billion, provided by the French Development Agency (AFD), the European Union (EU), and the European Investment Bank (EIB). This financial support is crucial for ensuring that the project meets its ambitious targets within the stipulated timeline.Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror, Managing Director & CEO of Kenya Power, emphasized the project's importance in driving economic development through improved electricity access. He stated, “The connectivity project that we have kicked off today will significantly contribute to our drive to accelerate the electricity access rate in the country for economic development.”

Components of Phase IV

The LMCP Phase IV comprises three main components:

  1. Consultancy for Supervision and Management:
Engaging experts to oversee project implementation ensures adherence to quality standards and timely completion.

  2. Works Contractors:
Contracts will be awarded to construction firms responsible for installing new infrastructure and connecting households.

  3. Supply of Metering Accessories and Prepaid Meters:
The integration of modern metering technology will facilitate efficient energy management for new customers.

Previous Successes and Future Goals

The Last Mile Connectivity Project has been instrumental in enhancing Kenya's economic growth by connecting institutions, businesses, and households. Improved electricity access has led to increased productivity, better healthcare services, and enhanced educational opportunities across the country.Looking ahead, Kenya Power aims to continue expanding its grid connections under subsequent phases of the LMCP. In July 2024, plans were announced to connect an additional 9,000 households under Phase V of the project, with funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Conclusion

The launch of Phase IV of the Last Mile Connectivity Project represents a significant milestone in Kenya's efforts to improve electricity access for its citizens. By connecting hundreds of thousands of new customers to the grid, Kenya Power is not only working towards achieving universal electricity access but also fostering socio-economic development throughout the country. As this initiative progresses, it is expected to further enhance living conditions and promote sustainable growth in various sectors across Kenya.
