Government of Kenya and World Bank Roll Out for Electrification Initiatives
Powering underserved counties through solar mini-grids and standalone systems
Apr 9, 2025

In a significant move towards expanding clean energy access across Kenya, the World Bank has partnered with the Government of Kenya to finance the Kenya Off-Grid Solar Access Project.
Boosting Access to Renewable Energy in Underserved Areas
Kenya has made tremendous progress in increasing access to electricity over the past decade. However, a significant portion of the population, particularly in rural areas, still lacks reliable access to electricity. The Off-Grid Solar Access Project aims to address this gap by providing affordable, clean energy to these underserved communities. With solar power being a renewable, abundant resource in Kenya, this initiative will reduce reliance on traditional fossil fuels, offering a sustainable solution to energy access.
Impact on Local Communities
This initiative is not only about providing electricity—it also carries far-reaching social and economic benefits. By providing power to public institutions such as schools, health centers, and businesses, the project will help:
Improve Education: Electricity will enable schools to extend learning hours, access educational materials online, and support digital learning tools.
Enhance Healthcare: Clinics and hospitals can now operate essential equipment, such as refrigeration for vaccines and diagnostic tools, to improve healthcare delivery.
Empower Women and Youth: Reliable electricity can create opportunities for local businesses, especially small enterprises, that predominantly employ women and youth.
Partnership with the World Bank
The partnership with the World Bank is a critical element in this project. As one of the leading international institutions promoting sustainable development, the World Bank’s involvement brings additional expertise and resources to the project. It also strengthens the Kenyan government’s ability to meet its ambitious goals of achieving universal electricity access by 2030 and expanding the use of renewable energy to 100% of the population.
Focus on Solar Energy Solutions
Solar energy will be the primary source of power for the mini-grids and standalone systems. This emphasis on solar power aligns with Kenya’s broader energy goals and its commitment to green energy. Solar power not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also supports the development of a clean energy economy in Kenya. The installation of these systems will also empower local communities to manage their energy sources sustainably, reducing their dependency on unreliable and expensive energy alternatives.
A Step Towards a Sustainable Future
The Kenya Off-Grid Solar Access Project is a testament to Kenya’s commitment to transitioning to a more sustainable and green energy system. The expansion of solar energy infrastructure will play a crucial role in meeting the country's growing energy demands while contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.
